Wilderness Self Defense©

Dense woods...who knows what's lurking? Be prepared for whatever is out there! The watchful bear, bad tempered elk, prowling mountain lion, rabid raccoons, aggressive people and rattlesnakes are just a few of the many things we may encounter while wandering our favorite mountains and streams. Encounters of this nature serve as the basis for stories that become family legends.

Do you possess the refined skills to avert disaster? What do you do when a rabid raccoon tears at the side of your sleeping bag? How do you signal a rutting elk that you and your horse are not worth charging? Where is the lion that left a huge paw print at the opening of your tent? Can you handle a human attack when returning to the trailhead and your parked car?

This program covers:

  • Trailhead hazards
  • How to avoid becoming this evening's meal
  • Avoiding territorial conflicts with wildlife
  • Dealing with the aggressive hiker
  • The walking staff as a defensive tool
  • Safety procedures when hiking alone
